Nature of Work
Vascular calcification is one of the major complications and
cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Currently, CKD affects an estimated 37 million people in the U.S.
(15% of the adult population; more than 1 in 7 adults), There is no
efficiency therapy available for the treatment of calcification.
The major goal of this position is to find a novel therapeutic
target for vascular calcification. This position is responsible for
characterizing genetically modified mice and cell lines to
elucidate the molecular mechanism of vascular calcification. The
person will remove genes in the entire genome of cells using CRISPR
(clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) gene
editing to examine which gene participates in the pathogenesis of
vascular calcification. The study also will require advanced
microscopic analyses (such as immunofluorescence confocal live
imaging) to elucidate the function of proteins in the development
of vascular calcification. The results will be reported in
Examples of Work Performed
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are
not limited to:
- Performing confocal microscopes
- Characterizing genetically engineered cell lines
- Performing CRISPR gene editing
- Performing general biochemical molecular biological techniques
such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunoblot
- Writing papers
- Helping supervisor to write grants.
