Nature of Work:

This full time professional research assistant (PRA) position is studying the molecular mechanisms that underlie birth defects in Dr. Emily Bates' Lab. We use mouse and fly genetics to model human genetic disorders, and use immunohistochemistry to understand how developmental signaling is perturbed by human genetic changes. In addition, we are interested in how environmental factors such as vaping nicotine or consuming CBD impact fetal development. Experimental techniques used in our research will include maintaining fly stocks, mouse genetic crosses, mouse dissection, immunohistochemistry, RNA isolation, DNA cloning, plasmid DNA preparation, and standard PCR.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Maintain mouse colony such that we have animals of the genotypes necessary for experiments
  • Conduct experiments with mice under direction of Principal Investigator
  • Ensure that lab supplies are in stock and available for use
  • Oversee the upkeep and servicing of durable laboratory items
  • Use PCR to determine genotypes of mice
  • Together with the Primary Investigator, the PRA will be responsible for training new personnel such as rotation students and interns in basic and advanced techniques
  • Assist Primary Investigator with management of summer interns

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $35,600 to $40,500.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Biology, Genetics, or a related field
  • Laboratory experience in a related field such as genetics, molecular biology, developmental biology, biology, or chemistry

Substitution: Relevant lab exerpience can subsitute for a Bachelor's Degree on a year for year basis

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire

Conditions of Employment:

Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado

Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with mice genetics
  • Previous experience with fruit fly genetics
  • Previous experience with microscopy
  • Previous experience with immunohistochemistry

Competencies:

  • Basic molecular biology skills (pipetting and PCR)
  • Knowledgeable in the fundamentals of genetics
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Ability to utilize organizational skills and maintain integrity across multiple tasks
