Performs clinical laboratory testing to determine compatibility
of transplant recipients and donors, including ABO-Rh and CMV total
and chimerism DNA sendouts, HLA Class I, HLA Class II, and KIR
genotyping. Adheres to standards of external regulatory bodies
including ABHI, CAP, and CLIA. Understands principles of
histocompatibility and immunogenetics. Prepares reagents while
adhering to strict quality control guidelines; performs and
documents instrument function checks and preventive maintenance.
Works independently and with others; readily adapts to changes in
work environment; performs multiple tasks simultaneously.
Communicates effectively with others. Participates in continuing
education. Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing the goals of
- Performs Class I and Class II HLA molecular and KIR molecular
typing according to written protocols. Performs ABO-Rh and CMV
total and chimerism DNA Sendouts according to written
- Maintains sample identity and integrity throughout sample
logging, processing, testing and reporting of results.
- Observes all record keeping, QC, and experiment number
conventions in DNA laboratory.
- Reads all results accurately and performs data analysis.
- Assigns DNA and/or KIR type.
- Completes report and cover sheet.
- Completes donor reports.
- Understands and carries out DNA amplifications using all
pre-PCR restrictions and standards.
- Applies special handling to low-concentration DNA samples or
when instructed through the laboratory management system.
- Maintains competency in one or more of the below areas as
determined by the supervisor:
- Extracts DNA according to protocol.
- Is aware of patient conditions that may affect yield and
- Knows how to calculate yield based upon 260/280 readings.
- Dilutes samples to appropriate concentrations.
Maintains and operates EZ-1 and Maxwell per protocol.
- Follows procedure.
- Records data.
Maintains and operates agarose gel electrophoresis or eGene.
- Follows procedure.
- Records data.
Maintains and operates Luminex 3D instrument.
- Next Generation Sequencing
- Follows procedure.
- Records data.
- Maintains and operates Pippin Prep and/or bead isolation.
- Maintains and operates GloMax
- Maintains and operates MiSeq.
j. Completes ABO-Rh and CMV total and chimerism DNA Sendouts
- Actively participates in quality assurance program.
- Is familiar with the major steps of a validation and can lead a
validation to completion with input from the Quality Unit.
- Notifies and documents equipment malfunctions.
- Monitors reagent inventory and notifies supervisor before
additional reagents are needed.
- Participates in reagent preparation and documents necessary
- Reviews SOP's as revised and entire SOP manual per established
- Participates in continuing education activities, including
annual re-training in laboratory safety issues in handling
bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, hazardous wastes and fire.
- Performs annual unknown testing of a previously characterized
sample for each test that is preformed in lab, including samples
from external proficiency testing programs.
- Complete annual DNA competency assessment successfully.
- Records results accurately and concisely communicates them as
needed to transplant personnel and supervisors.
a. Verifies presence of appropriate paperwork including test
requisition, HLA typing sheets and summary report prior to review
by supervisor and/or director.
b. Double-checks all paperwork for accuracy and completeness
prior to review by supervisor and/or director.
c. Completes reports and relays results in a timely fashion;
notifies appropriate personnel when further testing is needed and
when results will be ready.
d. Notifies Supervisor of reporting errors found and follows
through with necessary documentation.

follows safety guidelines, uses universal precautions and works
well with others and independently.
a. Follows all established policies and protocols related to
testing, reagent preparation and quality control.
b. Participates in the introduction and implementation of new
procedures and in the evaluation of new instruments.
c. Willing to occasionally work unscheduled hours; manages daily
work schedule and time effectively.
d. Demonstrates effective and pleasant communication skills and
human relations; provides quality customer service.
e. Notifies Supervisor and/or Director of assay or equipment
malfunctions, which compromise test quality.
f. Performs additional tasks as requested by Supervisor and/or

co-workers; contributes to a positive working environment.

Salary and Benefits:
The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at
$35,600 to $60,000. This position is not eligible for overtime
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set
based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to,
internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the
University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of
