Summary of Job Duties

Hourly Pay: $15.45

Estimated average hours per week: 24-40 various shifts

This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

Must be available to work weekends, days, evenings, and holidays as required.

Provide daily care for sheep, goat chickens, turkeys, and more. Perform daily upkeep of garden plants and trees. The position of Farm Caretaker at Plains Conservation Center supports the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department vision of connecting with the community and being acknowledged as an essential service defining the quality of life in Aurora. We will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first served basis. As soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of candidates, this position may close quickly and without notice.


  • Farm animal (sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, alpacas, etc.) care and upkeep to include feeding, watering, interaction, welfare checks, fence/pen repair and maintenance, and other essential duties.
  • Garden maintenance to include watering, irrigation system repair & maintenance, weeding, harvesting, and other essential duties.
  • Tree maintenance to include watering, weeding, mulching, and other essential duties.
  • Perform routine facility maintenance including janitorial duties.
  • Provide support and assistance to staff that provides environmental education programming at the site.
  • Provide information to the public regarding uses, rules, regulations, and fees.
  • Properly operate and maintain equipment.
  • Maintain and monitor various records.
  • Perform snow/ice removal according to City standards.
  • Assist in special event/project implementation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Minimum age: 18 years old due to City insurance requirements.

Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED

Abilities: Ability to work independently without direct supervision; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; understand oral and written instructions; operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment; ability to maintain a safe environment at work site.

Must be available to work weekends, days, evenings, and holidays as required.

Skills: Skill in carpentry, craftsmanship, and use of construction tools; use of personal computers and related software; operate a variety of equipment and vehicles including trucks, trailers, tractors, snowplows, all-terrain vehicles, etc.

Licenses, Certificates, or Equipment Required:

  • Applicants must have a current Driver's License with a good driving history.

This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment. WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Heavy physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 100pounds with assistance; frequent lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 80 pounds with or without assistance; considerable walking and standing; frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing; hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles; the vision for reading gauges and written instructions; hearing/listening for receiving instructions and warning signals.

Work Environment: Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes. Must be able to work overtime, split shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.

Equipment Used: Operates tools, equipment, and vehicles common to the assigned function.
