Job Description:

The Upward Bound program at Community College of Aurora is designed to help participants generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education. Participants are talented high school students who come from income-eligible backgrounds where neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree.

The program provides a summer program classroom instruction in a six-week, non-residential summer program. During the program, approximately 60 participants will receive: (1) instruction in composition, literature, world languages, mathematics, ACT/SAT Preparation, and laboratory science, (2) advising in the areas of educational and career opportunities, and (3) exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote personal and social growth.

Please note:

* The CCA UB Summer 2021 Program will be in a hybrid format to include online and in-person services. * Tutor/Mentor may not take classes or hold other employment during UB Summer Program hours (8 am - 5 pm with additional hours on Fridays for Campus Visits, Volunteer Events, and Cultural Activities). * Applicants must be available for the entirety of the summer program including the mandatory training (Upward Bound Summer Program, June 7 - July 16, 2021, and Mandatory Summer Staff Training, June 2-3, 2021) and weekly staff meetings and program events.


Tutor/Mentors promote educational aspiration and performance of Upward Bound summer participants by providing support in various opportunities for student engagement.

Tutor/Mentors are responsible for:

* Planning and facilitating educational, cultural, and recreational events * Leading small groups * Providing tutoring and advising to individuals and groups of students * Planning afternoon activities and study sessions for the participants * Promoting a community of mutual respect and trust * College visit supervision * Supervising of students' free time * Facilitating routine discipline problems * Evening and weekend hours required * Ability to work effectively with students, and community members of diverse backgrounds * Ability to work independently and as a team leader * Ability to multi-task * Bilingual


* College students must have a minimum of 30 credits or graduate by the beginning of the summer program and have a solid academic record. * Experience with, and commitment to, underrepresented, ethnically diverse youth * Experience supervising youth * Experience leading small and large groups * Expertise engaging both individuals and groups of students * Ability to work closely with a team and work independently


* Proficiency in Spanish (primarily verbal) * Tutoring experience * Understanding of restorative justice/conflict management practices * Experience working with first-generation students

Compensation:$3,500.00, June 7-July 16, 2021 summer stipend (approx. 240 hours for 6 weeks)
