The School has invested significant resources in structural biology/biophysics core and has recently established the Neurotechnology Center that provides cutting-edge core facilities to support neuroscience and works with School of Medicine Departments to grow the neuroscience research enterprise at CU-Anschutz.The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.The Department of Physiology and Biophysics has 14 primary and one affiliate faculty located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The department has an international reputation for research excellence, state-of-the art resources, a highly interactive and collaborative culture, and outstanding training programs.The Department has an annual budget of $7.8 million, approximately 67 percent of which is derived from competitive extramural grants. Research in the department is built on a foundation of innovation and excellence, with strengths in ion channel biophysics, structure, function, and physiology in neurons and muscle cells, as well as molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience analyses of neuronal circuits. Department of Physiology and Biophysics faculty participate extensively in medical and graduate student education and postdoctoral training and are members of several graduate programs, including the Neuroscience Graduate Program, Structural Biology and Biochemistry, Computational Biology, Pharmacology, and Integrated Physiology graduate programs.The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves on the School of Medicine's Executive Committee. We are seeking a Chair with a strong record of innovative scientific discovery who will maintain a well-funded research program. They will have leadership skills commensurate with a world-class research-focused department and a commitment to inclusive excellence. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in the Department's research portfolio and for promoting collaborative research throughout the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Chair is expected to maintain and enhance diversity amongst the Department's faculty, trainees and staff, enhance the Department's educational programs, and assure transparency in the Department's administration, management, budgetary planning and implementation.Position SummaryThe University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a Chair for the Department of Physiology and Biophysics to provide strategic and operational leadership. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, and serving on the School of Medicine Executive Committee, the Chair will be responsible for leading a world-class research-focused department and for maintaining an outstanding externally funded research program. The Chair will be responsible for leading additional growth in the Department's research portfolio and enhancing collaborative research throughout the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Chair will support academic programs for medical students, graduate students, and postdoctoral teaching and training, as well as research activities of the Department.The Department chair is expected to work collegially and productively with other chairs and center directors at the School and with colleagues and leadership at the Anschutz Medical Campus and in the CU System.The next Chair of Physiology and Biophysics will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining excellence in the Department's educational programs, as well as promoting the growth of research programs in collaboration with the School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bring together a diverse group of individuals to advance the common goals of the Department and the institution. The successful candidate will be a strong leader and have a proven track record of administration, education, and research, as well as a keen understanding of the complexities of an academic Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and the ability to lead the further growth and development of the Department in all missions.Major Responsibilities In collaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department, ensuring the necessary financial and human resources to achieve the agreed-upon objectives. Maintain an internationally recognized externally funded research program. Support and enhance inter-departmental graduate and post-doctoral training and the school's undergraduate medical program. Define and lead the Department's research strategy by expanding and strengthening research. Support principal investigators and other faculty within the Department in efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding to support research priorities. Ensure a deliberate investment into research activities and priorities within the Department. Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the Department budget, which encompasses all funding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines. Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty from diverse backgrounds. Ensure an atmosphere of support and development for all faculty, with an understanding of the challenges that may face minority faculty. Encourage ethical, professional practice across the Department, leading progress in diversity, equity and inclusiveness.Salary and Benefits:The salary range for this position has been established at $255,000 to $360,000.The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
