Job Summary:
This position is responsible for managing various aspects of
patients and administrative duties of the clinic. The Insurance
Specialist will create a positive impression for each patient,
family member, visitor, staff while performing tasks of, insurance
review, prior authorizations, obtaining demographic information,
explain financial requirements to the patient or patients
representative and collect the outstanding patient portion prior to
or at the point of service under minimal supervision, performs a
variety of patient and clerical duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
Evaluates and communicates patient's potential financial liability
directly to the patient prior to medical services being rendered
based on insurance verification data and medical cost
estimates.
Obtain insurance authorization and pre-certification for behavioral
health services. Includes obtaining and documenting covered and
non-covered benefits, plan type, copayments, co-insurance, out of
pocket, and deductible amounts and determining contract and benefit
eligibility. Contact insurance companies as needed.
Review, process and audit the medical necessity for each patient
behavioral health treatment and documentation insurance
authorization including review of CPT/ICD diagnosis codes.
Communicate with patient access and medical staff to inform them of
any restrictions or special requirements in accordance with
insurance plans.
Provide prompt feedback to physicians and management regarding
pathway documentation issues, and payer issues with non-covered
behavioral health services.
Communicate back to site on insurance update/status within 24 hours
of receipt of authorization request; stat requests require same day
update on insurance authorization to providers.
Process insurance/patient correspondence, including denial
follow-up. Maintain reimbursement correspondence and filing
systems.
Assists patient registration, answering patient calls and other
duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in biological science, nutrition, nursing,
health, human services, psychology, counseling, social work, or a
directly related field from an accredited institution.
A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional
experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year
for year basis.
One (1) year of insurance specialist experience in any aspect of
the revenue cycle process in healthcare. (Patient registration,
billing, prior authorizations etc.).
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of
hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
1-3 years of experience in insurance verification, financial
counseling, patient financial services, patient registration.
Insurance verification and authorization.
Customer service experience a plus.
Billing and coding experience a plus.
Experience with healthcare EMR (EPIC).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of insurance authorizations, EMR,
eligibility software. Scheduling software, scanning, vendor
systems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
Outstanding customer service skills.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Ability to use independent judgment.
Ability to work with diverse patient population, providers, and
staff.
Ability to comply with established rules, policies and procedures
and meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise discretion (e.g., patient confidentiality)
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
Comfortable working in high volume, fast paced office
environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn
software programs.
Experience using Electronic Health Record and Patient Health
Information management systems.
Demonstrated commitment and ability to advance diversity and

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has
been established as $55,911 - $71,119.
The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and
reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the
time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime
compensation depending on the level.
