The School of Medicine's Department of Pathology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Laboratory Science Professional (Open Rank: Entry-Senior Level).Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.Professionals at all levels are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals. At the senior level, work is performed fully independently.Nature of WorkLaboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential "wet" hazards. Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed. This position will support and contribute to a research team focused on characterizing and understanding the role that intrapulmonary bronchopulmonary anastomotic pathways play in severe hypoxemia in neonatal lung disorders, idiopathic pulmonary hypertension and sudden unexplained infant death, as well as the contribution of chromosome 21-related potent anti-angiogenic factors to impaired lung growth and pulmonary hypertension in infants and children with Down Syndrome.The position will assist with general laboratory operations and will carry out experimental work under direction of the PI. The successful candidate will have prior relevant laboratory experience, excellent bench research skills, strong communication skills, and be self-motivated, organized and detail oriented. The position will work both independently and collaboratively to help advance the research goals of the laboratory, with opportunities for own projects, and possible training of more junior personnel.Examples of Duties PerformedAll Levels: Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions Actively participate in laboratory and larger group meetings and journal clubs, and to give presentations in these settings. Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects Molecular biology techniques, PCRWestern blotting, ELISACell cultureTissue sectioning, H+E staining and immunohistochemistryOrgan dissection and tissue collection Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced Prepare lab for daily operations, including ordering, inventory, cleaning, and preparation of laboratory reagents and husbandry/maintenance of mouse colonies. Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary Animal handling, rodent colony maintenance, breeding, genotyping, and occasional weekend hours will be required Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues Review and implement lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when requiredIntermediate Level: Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions Independently review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects Assist management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives Assist and train students and team membersSenior Level: Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
