The Office of the Chief Research Informatics Officer has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Assistant to the Chief Research Informatics Officer position.

Department Summary:

The Office of the Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO) is responsible for empowering CU Anschutz with the leadership it needs to thrive in an increasingly data-driven world and will coordinate the use of information and information systems to transform biomedical research and improve quality and efficiency. The CRIO focuses on integrating analytic and data capabilities to maximize the impact of CU Anschutz's data assets and aid in the realization and advancement of the following key business differentiators: 1) Learning healthcare; 2) health system and research operational success; and 3) workflows and infrastructure to promote new translational discoveries and their implementation. The office fosters a data ecosystem that maximizes the return on investments in personnel, data production, and informatics infrastructure taking into account the needs of a diverse array of organizational partners, patients, and communities.

Job Summary:

This position functions as the Assistant to the Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO) and the programs and functions under the CRIO. This professional position plans, coordinates, and implements the day-to-day operational functions and services of the Office of the CRIO. The individual will work in a self-directed manner with excellent prioritization skills to provide expertise in the development and administration of business operations and procedures. As a first line of contact, this position must gain thorough knowledge of the complexities of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus organizational structure and its affiliates.

The Assistant to the Chief Research Informatics Officer must have a solid background in business administration as well as project and time management. To facilitate the required activities, the individual must be familiar with University of Colorado, state, and federal policies and procedures. Further, the successful candidate must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and have the ability to successfully manage multiple self-directed projects that may have competing priorities.

Examples of Work Performed:

General Operations

  • Independently manages and makes decisions pertaining to various operations of the CRIO and ensures that vision, mission, goals, and strategies of the CRIO are continually upheld.
  • Develops smoothly working initiatives within the CRIO. Examples of these initiatives include reimbursement for campus-wide initiatives, conferences/meetings, purchasing supplies, and setting up interviews for new potential leadership members within the CRIO.
  • Responsible for shared oversight, administration, implementation, and management for policies and procedures related to all aspects of the CRIO to ensure the University's compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and applicable policies.
  • Coordinates travel, domestic and international for the CRIO, which may include detailed itineraries reflecting appointments and expenditures for the CRIO, and other research leadership, within budget, plan official functions as needed, submit expenses within the Concur system, adheres to current financial policies and procedures, seeks training and guidance on new policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for recommending and implementing new processes for efficient business practices in the CRIO.
  • Ensures that sensitive and confidential issues are concisely communicated, negotiated, resolved and properly documented in accordance with all applicable (university, state, federal) regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provides appropriate source documentation and other educational materials to support and facilitate the ethical conduct of research, including pending federal and state legislation at the level.
  • Be familiar with federal government rules, regulation, and guidelines for grants and contracts, including issues such as conflict of interest and federally-mandated training requirements.
  • Acts as liaison to support the research process through scheduling and responding in writing or orally to internal and external requests for information.
  • Assists executive level management in developing plans and in determining the effectiveness and efficiency of operations in operational units and departments.
  • Writes and/or revises manuals, procedures, and materials relating to biomedical research process. Produces committee minutes, distributes, and prepares agendas and briefing packets.
  • Effectively handles sensitive and confidential personnel, HR, and financial issues on behalf of the CRIO with tact, timeliness, discretion, professionalism, and consideration.
  • Anticipates the needs of the CRIO and other members in leadership, and proactively evaluates data, verifies facts, and prepares reports containing team findings and recommendations.
  • Independently make decisions that affect daily activities of the CRIO, by determining the priorities of constituent issues and problems; handling these issues directly or referring them to the appropriate resource; follow-up on contacts or correspondence; maintain an office system within the rules of the State of Colorado, working with vendors to procure goods and services necessary to sustain the operation of the office.
  • Assume a leadership role and actively support the University of Colorado's commitment to diversity; support and ensure compliance with policies on equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity; endorse the implementation of programs within the Vice Chancellor for Research to the Chancellor's administrative area which support the stated values of the University of Colorado's community.
  • Performs related work as assigned by the CRIO or required by the nature and scope of the position.
  • Strategizes, develops, and implements special projects for the CRIO and Directors as needed.
  • Prepare or edit presentations. Compile data, conduct research and prepare preliminary drafts for various reports, special studies, and surveys; searches various resources to locate and assemble specific information Research historical and policy issues and advise supervisor(s) as needed.     • Manages in-person, written, and telephone requests and inquiries on behalf of the CRIO.
    • Sorts, handles, and distributes mail for the CRIO.
    • Develops and maintains a comprehensive filing system which enables access to historical and current office records, communications and both computerized and paper based information in a timely and efficient manner. Assures that documents are properly stored and accessible upon demand. Adheres to University document retention policies. Initiate and recommend changes in procedures as required.
