Founded in 1871, The Denver Medical Society is the Rocky Mountain region's oldest and largest local medical society. The membership consists of physician members from virtually every medical specialty and practice setting. From general practice physicians to research academicians, the DMS offers its members many professional opportunities and benefits through their membership. The society takes an active role in issues of importance to physicians and their patients throughout the Denver community.---As a professional organization for physicians, The Denver Medical Society supports and promotes the science and art of medicine; strives to maintain and improve the health of the people of Denver; advances the common ethical, societal, legislative and economic concerns of the medical profession; and provides a common voice for the medical profession. Executive Director Position Summary: The Executive Director is the administrative officer of the Denver Medical Society (DMS), charged with furthering the stated goals of the Society. The Director is relied upon to effectively communicate DMS positions on various issues to medical, governmental and community groups. The Executive Director facilitates the Society's success as an effective medical organization in today's political and medico-legal environment through advocacy, organizational management, Board governance and maintaining a current knowledge of ongoing developments in the health care industry, organized medicine and external influences. The Director acts as liaison to the Society membership and is responsible for the effective and efficient operational management of Society business. This position reports to the President and is accountable to the Executive Committee, as well as the Board of Directors. Job Duties Include:

  • Provide consultation to the Board in developing effective policies and positions on pertinent issues and execute action plans as directed. Identify, monitor and provide analysis of developments important to the Society that influence health care policy, regulatory compliance, medical practice viability and other relevant trends.
  • Establish, implement, and manage events, programs, social media engagement and web presence helpful to the membership and consistent with the Society's mission.
  • Establish recruitment and outreach activities to ensure the continued growth, member retention and viability of DMS.
  • Provide appropriate support services to members and seek new opportunities to meet member needs.
  • Manage the society's finances, which includes but is not limited to preparing the annual budget, maintaining fiscal responsibility in accordance with the budget, and working with the Society's accounting firm to update and maintain internal control systems.
  • Act as the initial interface between DMS and the public in a manner that reflects well upon the Society and creates a positive impression in the community.
  • Maintain and grow relationships between Denver, Colorado members of the General Assembly and DMS.
  • Provide administrative and policy support to the DMS Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the DMS representative on the CMS Board of Directors, and all other DMS committees and workgroups. This would include but is not limited to strategic planning, crafting minutes, organizing meetings and agenda development.
  • Provide appropriate information and support for the annual transition of DMS leadership to assure organizational continuity including administrative responsibility for the nomination and election of new officers and other positions.
  • Collaborate with the Colorado Medical Society and other component and specialty societies on policy and program development, membership recruitment and retention, advocacy, and overall support of organized medicine objectives in Colorado.
  • Execute effective communications with the membership for information sharing, event promotions, member benefits and other news pertinent to Denver, Colorado.
  • Manage and grow opportunities to develop sources of non-dues revenue; e.g., annual sponsors, advertising revenue, program sponsorship or exhibits, or opportunities to partner with other organizations.
  • Serve as Executive Editor of the Denver Medical Bulletin.
  • Serve as Secretary of the DMS in accordance with the laws of the State of Colorado.
  • Supervise other DMS staff and/or contract labor and delegate tasks appropriately. Qualifications:
    • Bachelors' degree is required.
    • Masters' degree in related field is preferred or equivalent experience.
    • Minimum of three years' experience in executive or senior level leadership role in nonprofit management is required.
    • Experience in Healthcare Industry strongly preferred.
    • Ability to consistently promote, support, work, and act in a manner in support of DMS' vision, mission and values.
    • Understanding of nonprofit financial management, accounting and activity-based cost budgeting.
    • Strong analytic, planning and multi-tasking, time management, and organizational skills.
    • Effective and strong verbal and written communication skills, sound decision making skills and results oriented and positive approach to problem solving.
    • Ability to inspire and induce various stakeholders to work together toward a common purpose.
    • Ability to lead through collaborative decision making and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to Board members, DMS members and Colorado legislators.
    • Strong background in Board management and strategic planning.
    • Ability to communicate fluently in English language both written and verbal. Position Status:
